He was chairman of Central Board of Excise & Customs (CBEC) and Special Secretary in the Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance, Government of India and retired in July 2012. Currently he is the Advisor of Center for Tax Awareness & Research and Member of Bar Council of Delhi.
Experience in handling indirect tax administration, including Union Budget formulation, tax policy and tariff fixation, revenue intelligence and investigation, adjudication of tax disputes, legal functions of the department, personnel administration and vigilance functions in CBEC.
Was actively involved in developing GST related policies and draft procedures & legislation.
Implemented a number of trade facilitation measures in Customs for voluntary compliance of tax payment by trade and industry; automation in Customs and Central Excise as well as e-governance initiatives.
